After the fall of communism progress happened fast in Hungary. Today it is a member of the EU and one of the more liberal countries of the former communist states. In Hungarian the country is called Magyarország and the magyarian tribes came to the area at the end of the 9th century from Russia. Linguistically Hungarian is related to Finnish. At various times Hungary has been a super power or part of the super powers in the region. The great era of the 14th and 15th century came to an end when the Osmanian Empire during the 16th century conquered and controlled the area. Austria defeated the Osmanians in 1697 and Hungary became a part of the House of Habsburg until 1918. History has left its mark and today we can thank the Osmanians for the fantastic bathing houses in Budapest.
