The nation of Austria was founded around 800 A.D. but in the 12th century it became a duchy. Until 1806 the country was an important part of the German-Austrian Empire. Austria and Hungary formed a double monarchy in 1867. After World War I the republic Austria was formed and during World War II the country joined Germany. On 27 April 1945, what today is Austria, became an independent nation.
Most probably view Austria as an Alp landscape where the von Trapp family go hiking, or the city of Vienna with its cafés and magnificent buildings.
Vienna also has a very lively gay scene, concentrated in the Wienzeilen area. The Pride parade and the Rainbow Ball in the winter attract hordes of gay tourists.
