Torremolinos has pretty much everything on offer. If you still want a bit more, it's not far from popular Malaga. Originally, Torremolinos was a sleepy fishing village, but began to awaken as a holiday destination in the fifties. The stars found Torremolinos when the town's first proper luxury hotel, Pez Espada, opened in 1959, with guests like Frank Sinatra, Ingrid Bergman, Sophia Loren, Ava Gardner, Monaco's prince Rainer and princess Grace, and Brigitte Bardot – they all stayed there. The oldest parts of Torremolinos, Carihuela, still breathe of ancient Spanish fishing village with small stone houses and narrow charming alleys. Torremolinos expanded uncontrollably in the sixties, seventies and the eighties. The old charming fishing village transformed into a concrete jungle. The party life got so intense that the frightened locals prayed for the godless tourists. However, in the nineties, the city and the beaches were restored and now it's the leading gay town along the Costa del Sol.
