Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus and the financial, political and cultural centre of the island. The Egyptians started to build the city in the 4th century. When Cyprus became independent from the British Empire, it faced a violent period and in 1974 Turkey invaded the island. Since then there is a UN zone in the city and a wall around part of the city. The border is called The green line. Nicosia is not by the coast and has no port. From here motorways go to for example Limassol and Larnaca, and they drive on the left side of the road.
On the 3rd April 2008 a small part of the wall was opened up on the main street of the city, Ledra.
