Södertälje is situated south of Stockholm and has been an inhabited area for over 6000 years. Excavations show that there was a farming culture here already 3000 B.C. Adam of Bremen mentioned the area already year 1070 in his texts about travelling between Skara and Birka.
Södertälje canal and its port laid the foundation to Södertälje's economic importance. Today, it is companies like AstraZeneca, and not the least, Scania that dominate as emplyers.
Södertälje has a large Assyrian, Syrian population, and from earlier also a large Swedisg Finnish community and both groups have characterised the city's development. One thing everybody has to do when visiting Södertälje is to eat the city's famous pretzel! En sak alla som besöker Södertälje måste göra är att äta stadens berömda kringla! Gay life here is un stiff competition with nearby Stockholm, but LGBT organisation RFSL has, since a few years back, organised more activities in the city.
