Newcastle upon Tyne- a riverside city of about 260,000 inhabitants, founded by the Romans, which used to be a major industrial area in the UK. Situated on the East coast at the mouth of the River Tyne, it was immortalized by Lindesfarne’s hit from the sixties called ‘Fog on the Tyne’. Like many old working-class cities, it has undergone major changes to become a more service oriented place with the usual shops, bars and businesses of a more gentrified way of life. There is a metro for good communications and the famous Byker Wall Housing Development, the UK’s first green development built with tenant participation and influenced by Swedish and Dutch ideas in the 60s and 70s.
The gay scene is mainly centered around the Central Station and a few streets left of it. There are a good range of bars and clubs, often with specialty nights such as ‘Suits you’ for the two piece guy at the Eagle and a quick Google check will tell you what’s on and what to wear! There are also drag nights and male strippers, anything it seems to get the crowds in.
The city offers some nice new riverside developments and walks, the famous bridge and some large shopping malls if it is raining. Around the coast you can find some stunning scenery and if you are feeling cultural/religious/ strong, drive up to Holy Island and have a bracing walk across the wind swept bay of this tidal island.
Newcastle is now famous as a party city for stag and hen nights, a major source of entertainment now in the UK. Large groups of binge-drinking lads and lasses in over the top fashions or fancy dress crashing from one bar to another in an increasing state of alcoholic confusion. Worth a look if only for the noise and joke value!
