Melbourne is the capital of province Victoria and was founded in 1835; 47 years after the first Europeans arrived in Australia. The city grew by river Yarra and quickly became the largest city in the country. However, in the 20th century Sydney outgrew Melbourne in size and Canberra took over as the country’s capital. Melbourne is beautifully situated by Port Phillip. The climate is mild and cool in the winter. The coldest it gets is around 6 degrees centigrade (June-August) and the hottest around 26 degrees in the summer (November-March). The city has a lively gay scene, with gay and queer festivals, focusing on film, skiing and partying, held several times every year. The Pride festival is held in connection to the Midsumma festival in January/February.
