Kristianstad was named after its founder, Danish king Christian IV. The year was 1614 and since then the city has been an important military base. However, most of the military is now gone and has been replaced by, among other things, the university. The city has well preserved buildings from the 18th and 19th century and boulevards are an important aspect of the appearance of the city. The city has a lively branch of RFSL, which organises the club Heaven.
