Beirut is the capital of Lebanon and the largest city in the country. Beirut was a much visited tourism location by the Mediterranean east coast before the civil war in Lebanon. The city was then called the "Pearl of the Mediterranean", as well as "Little Paris", as the French influence was big and French was spoken generally. The oldest historical proof in the city is from from 1400 B.C. Now, bombed houses and luxurious shopping are side by side. Tidy walking streets, washed sandstone facades, tons of boutiques, restaurants and bars, as well as bombed buildings, damaged ruins and messy desolate grounds. Theonly public beach still available is Ramlet El Baida-beach. Everywhere in Beirut music rules, as well as smiles, laughter and friendliness. Beirut was and is known for its nightlife, but not for its gay nightlife.
