The city was founded in 997 and is important in the history of Norway. Here the Nidaros Cathedral is located, the only cathedral in Scandinavia. There are numerous shops, cafés, pubs, restaurants and one of the country's universities. The well-known Hurtigruten visits Trondheim, on its way south to Bergen, and again on its way north to Kirkenes.
