"Jokkmokk is Sámi which means “a bend in the creek”. Originally the name came from a group of forest Sámi people who had their winter stay at lake Talvatis.
The central town of Jokkmokk was established in the beginning of the 1700th century when King Charles IX decided to create church- and market places in the northern parts of Sweden. His goal was to expand the country, to gain control over the Sami’s commerce region and collect taxes to finance his wars. This is the origin of Jokkmokk Winter Market, which first was held year 1605.
Far in on the 1900th century the Jokkmokk parish population mostly consisted of Sámi people, however the settlers and water navvy’s changed this condition."
