Mariehamn, with approximately 10 500 inhabitants, is the largest district in regard to population and the only city on Aaland. Close to 1.5 million people visit Aaland every year, most arrive on one of the ferries to the port of Mariehamn. The wooden houses still stand - on some of the streets from the time of Maria Alexandrovna herself, the Empress consort of Alexander II of Russia - and it's leafy, quiet and idyllic. However, Mariehamn is also a small big city with modern buildings and well-developed services and infrastructure.
