Albufeira is on the Algarve in southern Portugal and is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the region. This was once a little fishing village that turned into a tourism paradise, still with the fishing village in its centre. During the tourist season the population is quadrupled. The old town is historically protected and no big hotels can be built. Albufeira is on a big cliff and the name comes from Arabic Al-Buhera, which means fort by the sea. This area has the most sun hours in all of Europe, but the Atlantic coast is somewhat chillier than the Mediderranean. Here they eat fish and seafood, accompanied with "green wine", vinho verde. It'smade with young grapes and is served slightly chilled. The nightlife takes place on "The Strip". The Gay beach is on Armação de Pera, called"Praia Grande".
