The island was populated by Polynesian seafarers. The first Europeans arrived here at the end of the 18th century and when more travelling trades men arrived to this Polynesian kingdom the importance of Honolulu for the sea traffic between North America and Asia grew. At the turn to the 20th century the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown and the country joined USA.
