Willemstad is the capital of the Netherlands Antilles and is situated on the West Indian country’s biggest island Curaçao. Indians from Venezuela arrived here in the 7th century. The capital was an important centre of commerce so different European countries have fought to gain power of the island since 1499 when Alonso de Ojeda arrived. In 1997 the old town was listed as a world heritage by UNESCO. Tourism, especially from the Netherlands, is an important source of income for the island. A lot of work is done to attract gay tourism and in Willemstad there are some gay clubs and bars.
