Vienna was founded by the Romans on a Celtic settlement, then called Vindobona. Vienna's many mighty buildings tertify of the city's time as a royal capital in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Vienna is often called "Rotes Wien" because the Social Democrats have always had their base here. During the great era of the Social Democrats they built functionalistic residential area, Gemeindebauten. When you tire of the palaces of the Empire, it's nice to change to some functionalism!
