Villa Godthem was built as a private residence for the opera singer Johan Uddman in 1874, as a gift from a group of his most devoted fans. The story of how Godthem earned its name can be traced back to the Villa’s first and rather stout owner. On the rare occasion that Uddman walked home from the Opera he exclaimed, out of breath:
‘Jag har GÅTT-hem!!!’ (‘I have WALKED-home’).
Though the Villa’s name rings with the opera singer’s relief to return home, it has been a long time since Godthem was used as private residence. Ever since the Stockholm Exhibition of 1897, Godthem has functioned as a restaurant – making it exactly as old as Prinsen. This is not all that they have in common: both restaurants are known to serve legendary ‘Plankstek’. ‘Plankstek’, a traditional dish that originates from Hungarian cuisine where it is called ‘Fatanyeros’, is comprised of a pan-fried steak served with duchess potatoes and seasonal greens on a wooden platter. It has become a trademark for the style of cooking Godthem represents, and we hope that you try it.
