Enschede, city and municipality in eastern Netherlands. The city has know early known history. During World War II it was one of the first Dutch cities taken by the Germans, since it's so close to the German border. The city has suffered several fires as the oldest buildings were built with wood. Tha last time in 2000 when a warehouse of fireworks exploded. Enschede has several museums, among them a historical museum about the city's earlier textile industry. Enschede has the largest gay community in eastern Netherlands and like to profile itself as "eastern Amsterdam".
