The first time Halmstad is mentioned is in 1231 when Danish king Valdemar Sejr writes about a royal farm in the listings of his possesion of land. The town was then situated where Övraby is today. In the 1320's the city was moved to its present place. During the Kalmar Union, between 1400 and 1520, when Scandinavia was a united country the union king was elected in Halmstad.
Halmstad has been in the line of fire between Sweden and Denmark for many years. At the peace in Roskilde in 1658, the province of Halland and also Halmstad, was handed over to Sweden.
Halmstad is a characteristic summer city, partly because of its close proximity to trendy residental and tourist areas by the sea in Tylösand and Frösakull.
