Lidingö is an own district outside Stockholm. Through runic inscriptions from the time of the Vikings and graves from the Iron Age, it has been proven that the island of Lidingö has been inhabited already 600 B.C. In 1909 the island became an autonomous district after first having been the property of the Banér family and then sold to the bourgeois of Stockholm. The foremost tourist attraction is without a doubt Millesgården, beautifully situated, offering exciting exhibitions all year around. Raoul Wallenberg who saved many Jews from the persecution of the Nazis in Hungary, and then disappeared in the Soviet Union, was born on the island.
